Bil Martineau
My name is Wiliam (Bil) Martineau. I'm related to many of the 1st settlers of Quebec. My 1st Nations heritage comes from Jean Nicolet and his wife, Bahmahmaadjimiwin Giisis.at the time that Quebec was being established in the 1600's.
Samuel de Champlain had sent Nicolet to a Nippissing Village to establish a trading post to make trade with the Nippissing folks and to make trade easier. His mission was to learn the culture, the language and customs of these people. .A 'marriage' in the Native custom to make interpretation and trades much easier. Jean and Giisis had one child, Euphrosine Madeleine Nicolet. I have traced this line to me through all my G-Grandparents In a Genealogy book titled "1st Metis Families of Quebec- Volume 2" by Gail Morin; as well as many other sources.
I started getting involved in the Native Culture in 1976 by attending Pow-Wow's and doing research of my own family. I was a Member of the Wollomonuppoag Indian Tribal Council and held the position of 'Trail Chief' for 2 & 3 years. I was also a Member of the Dighton Intertribal Council of Dighton, Mass. I was elected as a Sub-Chief for 2 terms and then as Chief for 2 terms. I had represented this council as a Member of the Wolf Tail Singers when our Drum attended many Pow-Wow's within the New England area.
I have given informational talks of the Native culture at a few of the facilities I was employed at as well as bringing our Drum for learning demonstrations to the Elderly and those that are disabled at the Cardinal Cushing School for the handi-capped.
I am now a Member of The Metis Of Maine and sit on the Council of Elders for the group. At the Pow-Wow's for this group, I set up much of my Long-hunter and Voyager equipment to give educational talks to those those that ask of it.
